I am passionate about helping others to achieve their full potential in their career and in their personal life. I believe that mentoring has the potential to:

  • Open up new ways of thinking
  • Remove blockages in a project or career
  • Give support to someone who is going through a difficult time
  • Make decisions that seemed difficult become easier to resolve – a decision not to proceed can be harder than keeping going or making the decision to take that next big step
  • Help to give focus at a key time either when doing a particular course, accreditation, starting a new business or time of career or personal change
  • Give a person affirmation that they are good at what they are doing and have a range of options for the future.

It is important that the mentor and mentee respect each others confidences and boundaries. They must be able to talk openly about the issues that are important to the mentee.

It is not always necessary for the mentor and mentee to have the same backgrounds as often the ‘why’ questions asked by a mentor who is not immersed in the same profession can open up some interesting areas for discussion that can make everyone think about things differently.

The mentor brings their experience to the table, and should use this to present options and ideas that prompt the mentee to come up with solutions and actions which suit them. One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given was

‘listen to everyone who gives you advice, but then decide which pieces of advice you feel will work for you’

I have gained greatly throughout my career by having the chance to work with excellent mentors who have helped me to make some major decisions. I have also learnt a lot from the many people I have mentored throughout my career.
